🧠 The Hardest Conversation: Canine Cognitive Disorder & Quality of Life 🐾

I recently listened to the latest Canine Arthritis Management (CAM) Podcast episode 61 on Canine Cognitive Disorder (CCD), and it hit every critical point needed for this difficult subject. I highly recommend it to all senior dog owners and professionals.

The Empathy Gap in Diagnosis

Unlike many diseases, there’s no simple blood test for CCD. Diagnosis is owner-led—it relies entirely on your observations of subtle, heartbreaking changes. This fact makes the approach we take as professionals absolutely vital.

I was devastated when one of my dedicated owners shared the dismissive response they received from their vet: “You wouldn’t put your gran down if she had dementia or arthritis.”

That brusque reply was not only unhelpful, it was deeply damaging. What they desperately needed was support to navigate the reality of their life—a reality completely turned upside down, from day to night trying to meet their beloved dog’s deteriorating needs. They needed compassionate guidance and I truly felt the reason our paths crossed and they sought me out as a therapist was my own experience of this condition and working with dogs and their owners in palliative and end of life care.

Euthanasia: The Gift Used Wisely

I was honoured to find them an empathic vet and work through their dog’s final stages as comfortably as possible. As Dr. Kathy Murphy BVetMed, DPhil, CVA, CLAS, MRCVS (Barking Brains CEO) the expert on the podcast wisely states, euthanasia is a gift to be used wisely. It’s a final act of love when every other avenue has been exhausted, and as she notes, it’s a choice many people struggling with severe human dementia wish they had themselves.
